100 Years Ago – Oct. 18, 1916
Took exam — Guy Carroll returned last week from Augusta, where he took the examination to become a registered druggist and has resumed his duties at the Hatheway Drug store.
Awarded contract — Astle & Page, the local contracting concern, have been awarded the contract to build the new four-story hotel at Fort Fairfield, which will contain 50 rooms. Their contract is to be completed May 1st, 1917.
75 Years Ago – Oct. 16, 1941
Promotion — Pvt. Walter E. Boyce, a Selective Service man drafted from Houlton, is the first draftee to be promoted to the grade of Sergeant from the Harbor Defenses of Portland, and is one of the few draftees to attain that rank in the Army of the United States.
Twin birthday — On October 2nd, the oldest twins in town, Frank Leavitt and Mrs. George Sawyer (nee Lillian Leavitt) observed their 75th birthdays. Mr. and Sawyer spent the day with Mr. and Mrs. Leavitt.
50 Years Ago – Oct. 19 , 1966
Open house — Mr. and Mrs. Roy Sharp of Linneus were honored on their 50th wedding anniversary Oct. 11 with an open house party at the Roosevelt School with 175 attending. The guest book was circulated by Miss Cynthia Warman, Miss Joan Tomilson presided at the punch bowl and in charge of the gift table were Mrs. Mahlon Adams and Mrs. Sam Saunders.
New rifles — Ken Paradis, chairman of the annual Hunter’s Breakfast sponsored by the Dux Club, presented new 30.30 rifles to Peter Harvey of Monticello and Clifford Tingley of Houlton. The Dux gave away the rifles as a part of their promotion for the breakfast, which attracted a record 278 persons.
25 Years Ago – Oct. 16, 1991
New members — Members installed for the 1991-92 Houlton Woman’s Club are Virginia Hale, Marie Wright, Alta Sommerville, Dorothy McCain, Jayne Sanipass, Patrice Hipsley, Mary Ann Marciniak, Gemma Bartley and Tami Hill. The club meets at the Atrium twice a month for a noon luncheon meeting with a guest speaker and program.
Merger — Everett Curry of the Curry Insurance Agency of Island Falls and Robert E. Anderson of the FA Peabody Company have announced the merger of the agencies. Florence Grant has accepted employment with the FA Peabody Company and will be available to service customer needs at the Island Falls office.
