Rotary tackles polio with purple pinkies

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The University of Maine at Presque Isle will join with the Presque Isle, Caribou, Fort Fairfield, Limestone and Washburn Rotary Clubs to present the 5th annual World Polio Day and Purple Pinkie Project event from Saturday, Oct. 22, to Monday, Oct. 24, 2016.

The fundraiser benefits Rotary International’s End Polio Now initiative to eradicate polio worldwide. For a donation of $1, anyone is welcome to have their pinkie painted purple on Monday, Oct. 24, throughout the central Aroostook area. The marking reflects the fact that volunteers use purple dye to mark children’s pinkies after they’ve been vaccinated for polio.
Purple Pinkie stations will be set up in the following locations:
UMPI: Center for Innovative Learning, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Northern Maine Community College, Akeley Student Center, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
The Aroostook Medical Center, A.R. Gould Hospital cafeteria, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
UMPI’s Houlton Higher Education Center, front desk, 8 a.m.-1 p.m.
Stations will also be set up at Presque Isle High School, Presque Isle Middle School, Zippel Elementary School, Pine Street Elementary School, Mapleton Elementary School, Easton Junior-Senior High School, Easton Elementary School and MMG Insurance.
Additionally, students in the university’s BioMed, SEAM and Business clubs will help out at some of these stations.
All are urged to make your mark to end polio now.
