Cross country runners get set for regional meet

The cross country regionals are set for this Saturday at Belfast, and local teams got in some preparation for the championship meet this past week.

Presque Isle will be part of the Class B competition at the Troy Howard Middle School, with the boys racing at 11 a.m. and the girls at 11:35 a.m.
Washburn will run in the Class C event, which begins with the boys’ race at 12:10 p.m., followed by the girls’ at 12:45 p.m.
The Wildcats were in Old Town this past Saturday for the Penobscot Valley Conference championships. Madison Jandreau and Isabelle Jackson fashioned top-10 performances as PI placed fifth out of seven teams in Class B.
Jandreau, a sophomore, came in eighth with a time of 21:25.6 on the 3.1-mile course. She was followed closely by Jackson, a junior whose time was 21:27.
Also for Presque Isle, junior Madelyn Wing was 35th in 25:38.1, junior Eleanor Goheen 38th in 25:59.2 and freshman Stephanie Donovan 43rd in 26:59.5 as the other scorers. Junior Olivia Mosher (28:57.6) and sophomore Alexandra Walsh (29:58.9) also competed for the ’Cats, who scored 130 points as a team in the meet.
Mount Desert Island was the team champion with 46 points. The Trojans had the individual champion in Tia Tardy, who set a course record with a time of 18:58.8. In the team scores, Caribou was second with 74 and Ellsworth third with 86.
The Presque Isle boys came in seventh place with 146 points. Junior Max Bartley was 11th in 18:27.8 to lead the way for the Wildcats, while teammate Trace Cyr was 21st in 19:11.9.
Other Wildcat top competitors on Saturday were sophomores Brandon McKnight (30th, 19:57.4), Joshua Ashton (41st, 20:27.9) and Owen McQuarrie (43rd, 20:48). Junior Ian Hoyt-Franz (21:39.6) and freshman Carter Jackson (22:30.5) rounded out the list of PI racers.
Caribou’s Dylan Marrero was the race winner in 17:55.9 and his Vikings easily captured the team title with 29 points, with John Bapst (82) and Ellsworth (84) following.

At Washburn last Wednesday, Aroostook County’s Class C teams gathered for the final regular season meet.
The Beaver teams each placed third, with the girls scoring 54 points and the boys 63. LCS/MSSM’s girls’ team and the Greater Houlton Christian Academy boys came away with the team wins.
Sophomore Kassie Farley paced the Washburn girls by placing third in 20:41 on the 2.8-mile course. Teammate Maggie Castonguay, a freshman, was eighth in 23:02. Mollie Clark was 12th in 24:04, followed by Samantha Churchill (15th, 25:10) and Samantha White (18th, 26:13).
Teagan Ewings of GHCA was the race winner in 19:46, six seconds ahead of teammate Bridget Hill.
Washburn junior Devon Maynard came in third place in the boys’ meet with a 17:28 clocking. Also finishing among the top 10 was the Beavers’ Konner Jordan, a junior who was ninth in 19:41. Four other Washburn runners competed, with Edwin McLaughlin 14th in 20:17, Brennan Viola 18th in 21:43, Cameron Hartford 19th in 23:14 and Caleb Thompson 24th in 26:03.
Wesley Ganglfinger of GHCA posted the fastest time of 16:38, with James Cyr of LCS/MSSM taking runner-up honors in 17:12.
