Teams wrap up sports season
The fall season is ending soon for the University of Maine at Presque Isle athletic teams, but they were able to enjoy some success over the weekend.
Owl volleyball wins a pair
The UMPI volleyball team won two of three matches played during their recent trip to Vermont.
The Owls are now 5-22 on the season and host the University of Maine at Fort Kent today for a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. UMPI’s senior players will be recognized at the final home match of the season.
On Friday, the Owls defeated Johnson State College in Johnson, Vt. by a score of 3-0. Abby Jewett’s 12 kills and Hannah Williams’ 10 digs led the effort.
On Saturday, UMPI took on Lyndon State and Johnson State in Lyndon, Vt. The Owls lost a tight match to Lyndon State, 3-1, and then stopped Johnson State, 3-0. Jewett had 20 kills and 18 digs in the loss to Lyndon State. Williams contributed seven kills and 18 digs and Esmeralda Galvan led in digs with 25, while Laura Aroz had 21 assists.
In the victory over Johnson State, Jewett led the way with 19 kills and Williams added seven to go along with eight digs. Aroz picked up another 27 assists.
XC squads compete in state meet
The cross country teams were in New Gloucester for the Maine State Championships. The Owl men placed ninth on the very technical eight-kilometer course located at Pineland Farms. Sully Jackson had a time of 28:38 to place 58th in the 122-man field. Trevor Levesque was 70th in 29:39 and coach Christopher Smith called the performance Levesque’s best of his collegiate career. Saul Nunez took 89th in 31:44.
Colby College was the champion and Bates College was second. James Jones of Bates took the individual title.
The women displayed improved showings in their meet and also took ninth place. Chenoa Jackson was the leading Owl runner at 23:48, just a second faster than teammate Brianna Lesperance. They placed 80th and 81st, respectively. Elise Gudde was the third UMPI runner to cross the fininsh line on the five-kilometer course, taking 104th in 27:01.
Bates took first place and Sarah Kelley of Bowdoin was the winning racer in 18:38.
Several UMPI runners will travel to Waterville Friday for a meet against Thomas College as preparation for the North Atlantic Conference championships in Johnson, Vt. Oct. 29.
Owl men split matches
The men’s soccer team played over the weekend, winning Saturday’s match over Hampshire College in Amherst, Mass., 6-2. Cody Blair connected on a goal off a Derek Healy assist to open the scoring three minutes into the match. Dean Costello and Dan Swallow also had first-half goals for the Owls.
In the second half, Blair scored again and Healy tacked on a pair of insurance tallies to round out the scoring. Matthew Manter had the win in goal with 11 saves.
On Sunday, UMPI was blanked by Fisher College in Boston, 3-0. Manter collected nine saves as he was peppered with 38 shots.
UMPI (4-10-1) wraps up its season at UM-Fort Kent Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. The Bengals are the top-ranked team in the USCAA.
Women have streak snapped
The UMPI women’s soccer squad routed Hampshire College Saturday, 7-0, before being doubled up by Fisher Sunday, 6-3. Carla Halvorson and Delia Schreiber had three goals each and Jessy Dickison scored once against Hampshire in Amherst, Mass. Allison Lopez and Megan Jellison combined to save 13 shots in goal.
Halvorson netted a pair of goals and Schreiber had the other against Fisher the following afternoon. It was the Owls’ first loss after going 4-0-1 over their last five matches. The team is now 5-6-2 heading into Saturday’s regular season finale at UM-Fort Kent, which begins at noon.
