PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — For many local residents and city employees, Saturday, Oct. 29, has been a long time coming, but the grand opening of the new Sargent Family Community Center will take place as planned.
The public is invited to attend the festivities from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Police Department’s Skywatch Booth will be outside, allowing the public to catch a bird’s-eye view.
The Presque Isle High School Band will perform at 10 a.m. outside, followed by introductions and a ribbon cutting at 10:30.
Face-painting for children will be offered in the lobby by Leah Rodriguez of Wintergreen Arts Center. Visitors may view the Donor Wall, created by local artists Heather Harvell and Brian Farley.
The Teen Room will have a basketball hoop game and pingpong. There are also big screen TVs, gaming systems and wi-fi.
The teen room will regularly be open Monday through Thursday, 3-7 p.m.; Friday, 3-9 p.m.; and weekends, 12-5 p.m.
On Saturday the Senior Room will feature recipes and smoothies by TAMC’s Healthy Aging, 11 a.m.-12 noon; games, adult coloring and a cellphone camera workshop by Seniors Achieving Greater Education (SAGE), noon; and bingo by Leisure Village, 1 p.m.,with prizes by the Presque Isle Downtown Revitalization Committee. Photographs of the construction process will be shown on the projection screen.
During regular hours, the senior room will be open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. with various programs.
The Multi-Purpose Room will feature a storyboard for children by the Aroostook County Action Program from noon to 1 p.m., and interactive 19th-century children’s games, 1-2 p.m., by the Presque Isle Historical Society.
Once the facility opens for regular business on Monday, Oct. 31, a wide variety of activities for every age will be offered in this room.
The fall schedule for the gymnasium includes open gym, over 30 basketball, Little Wildcats Hoops, grades 6-8 open gym, men’s hoop league, grades 3-5 open gym, adult pickleball, adult volleyball and women’s hoops.
The walking track will be open every day, Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., and on weekends from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
