Teachers invite public to film on learning
WASHBURN NEWS
By Amy Sawyer
Do you remember a time when you were in school but you couldn’t learn, when the ability was there but your mind was distracted by something else?
Ten Washburn teachers took part in a presentation of “Paper Tigers,” and were so inspired by the stories in the movie that they wanted to share it with the community.
The 21st Century After School Program is inviting the public to join them on Friday, Oct. 28, for a community screening of the film. “The Road to Resilience” includes lesson plans and events for students and a chance to share and collect ideas from our community. This event is a part of the national celebration for “Lights on Afterschool” and is sponsored by Washburn 21st Century After School Program in cooperation with Aroostook County Action Program.
The night will begin with a baked potato bar, 5:45 – 6:15 p.m., in the Washburn District Elementary School cafeteria. The movie will begin at 6:30, and at 8 p.m. there will be an open forum and community conversation. The conclusion and door prizes will start at 8:45 p.m.
More about the film is on www.papertigersmovie.com. Due to the content and language in the movie, this event is intended for audiences 17 years and older. Youth under 17 must be with a parent/guardian.
Washburn 21st Century ASP staff will provide childcare from 6:15 until the end. For information, contact Halina Herzog, Washburn 21st Century ASP coordinator, at hherzog@msad45.net or 455-4504.
Wreath fundraiser
The Spain and Paris tour students will be selling holiday wreaths from now until Nov. 20. They are handmade and approximately 30 inches across. Plain wreaths are $15 and decorated wreaths are $25.
Profits will go toward the students’ trip fees. For information, contact Tracy Reed at 762-0061 or treed@msad45.net, or any tour participant.
Washburn Rec notes
Washburn Recreation Department Director Marcie Barbarula kept students busy during the two-week harvest break by scheduling multiple activities, including soccer games and practices along with several field trips.
Children enjoyed field trips to Goughan’s Farm corn maze in Fort Fairfield, a hike at Haystack Mountain in Castle Hill with lunch at Presque Isle’s Mantle Lake Park, swimming at UMPI’s Gentile Hall, and miniature golf at Goughan’s Farm.
Hunters breakfast
The Rotary Club of Washburn will hold their annual Hunters Breakfast on Saturday, Oct. 29 at the Trailrunners Clubhouse from 4:30 to 8 a.m.
Door prizes will be available, and the club will conduct a raffle for 100 gal of fuel oil, $100 of hunting supplies and a $25 Wal Mart gift card. All are welcome.
