HOULTON, Maine — Principal Candace Crane and the staff at Houlton Elementary School held its annual Spudtacular Day Thursday, Oct. 6 just before the Columbus Day weekend.
This special event was centered around Maine potatoes and the farming industry. Students had decorated potatoes at home for a school-wide display just in time for the Fall Parent Open House held that week. They used their imaginations to create amazing characters out of a potato. Those characters included: emojis, animals, Disney characters, sea creatures and fairy tale characters.
On Spudtacular Day students participated in a variety of potato related activities including: Hot potato – a derivative of musical chairs, potato print making, potato spoon race, potato sack race, barrel rolling, computer games and making and tasting potato latkes.
The second-grade classes were also involved in learning more information about the local potato harvest with Nancy Wright of Littleton, recently honored for her involvement in the Maine Agri-Women’s group. Students viewed a video set in Aroostook County focusing on potato harvest, they received books and other items relating to potatoes.
Principal Crane and the elementary school staff promoted this fun day of learning in unique ways. As a special treat for the staff, Crane provided baked Maine potatoes with several different toppings for lunch.
