1966: Hospital rates jump $6

115 Years Ago — Oct. 30, 1901

     Ridin’ along in my automobile — H.A. Edwards received his automobile Thursday of last week. It is a beauty and Mr. Edwards is the first Caribou man to own one of these fine carriages.

     Dam work — Work repairing the dam across the Aroostook River will be completed this week, with the exception of two piers which will be build during the coming winter.

100 Years Ago — Sept. 10, 1916

     Young winter — Caribou residents awoke Saturday morning to find a young winter, the ground being covered with snow. It is reported that two inches of the “beautiful” fell Friday night night in New Sweden.

75 Years Ago — Oct. 30, 1941

     Robbers strike — Caribou was the scene of a bold store robbery early Tuesday morning when thieves smashed the show window of the Johnson Jewelry store and helped themselves to watches valued at $250. Night officer Solman after hearing a crashing noise about 2:30 a.m. hastened to investigate where he found a portion of the Johnson’s window smashed. No traces of the thieves was observed.

     Neglectful motorists — Caribou motorists paid nearly $150,000 to the Caribou Municipal Court for operating motor vehicles that were not inspected at the proper time at the last inspection period. Motorists are warned ot see that their automobiles are trucks are properly inspected before Sat., Nov. 1 in order to avoid lines.

50 Years Ago — Nov. 2, 1966

     Hospital Rates Jump $6 — A $6 per day increase in room rates at Cary Memorial Hospital was announced Tuesday by Clayton Harrington, administrator. The increase became effective Nov. 1. The new raise in rates will up the wards to $24 a day, the semi-private rooms to $27, private rooms without baths to $29, private rooms with baths to $31, and pediatrics to $24, it was revealed.

     Halloween prankster wounds boy — The local police department is anxious to secure any information which will lead to the apprehension of a youth who fired a BB gun into the crowd of young spectators at the Halloween bonfire Monday evening, wounding a 9-year-old boy in the leg, and then disappearing into the crowd. The chief emphasized that BB guns are not toys.

25 Years Ago — Oct. 30, 1991

     Voters headed to polls — In the election this coming Tuesday, Caribou voters will go to the polls. Voters will see a change in the procedure this year. The city has returned to paper ballots that will be recorded on a new tabulator.

     New ramp — The MDR Construction Co. of Presque Isle is busy trying to meet a mid-November deadline of completion of the new handicapped accessible ramp at the U.S. Post Office in Caribou. The cost of the job is estimated at $20,000.
