100 Years Ago – Oct. 25, 1916

 Elected — Phoebe Vincent of this town has been elected treasurer of the Student Committee on Endowment at Colby College.

 Reopen — The Shamrock Tea Room will reopen for business, Thursday, Nov. 2nd, in the Cary Bldg., Court St.

75 Years Ago – Oct. 23, 1941

 Awarded prize — The Houlton Pioneer Times was awarded third prize in the contest for the best newspaper story on the State of Florida offered in connection with the recent visit of the National Editorial Association to this state. The article was written by Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Esters and covered four full pages. A check for $50 was received from the Florida Light and Power Company.

 Faithful worker — One of the most faithful Red Cross workers in Houlton is Mrs. George Small, 82, who has worked on several quilts for Southern Aroostook Chapter. She has pieced up two of three quilts alone. Despite her age Mrs. Small is on hand no matter what the weather to assist in the relief of war sufferers.

 

50 Years Ago – Oct. 26 , 1966

 Conference — Houlton’s Tri-Hi-Y club will have the largest delegation in Maine when 66 local girls register for the State YMCA Older Girls’ Conference in Portland. Houlton’s contribution to the program is Mrs. Anthony McLaughlin, her specialty is creative dancing.

 Representative — The new Brenda Baker has been named. The Maine Potato Commission has concluded a summer-long search for a young Maine housewife to serve as Brenda Baker, the living trademark for Maine’s important potato industry. Chairman Seth Bradstreet of Newport said the commission has selected Mrs. Wayne Hollingsworth, an Augusta housewife and mother of three small children. She will travel throughout the eastern United States promoting Maine potatoes wherever they are sold.

 

25 Years Ago – Oct. 23, 1991

 Award — Houlton High School English teacher Alison Wiggin received a plaque for winning the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Volunteer Management on Oct. 15. Wiggin said she might not have won the award had it not been for the help and support of people like school guidance counselor Ann Bradley.

 Alumni award — Marjorie Kimball Brooks of Houlton, Class of 1929, received the Distinguished Alumni Award for 1991 during Homecoming, held at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. Sharon Roix presented the award to Marjorie.
