Ashland blanks Deer Isle-Stonington

ASHLAND, Maine — The seniors led the way for the Hornets in their opening playoff game Thursday afternoon, and the result was a resounding victory.

Ashland, the No. 3 seed in Class D North, overpowered visiting Deer Isle-Stonington, ranked 14th, by a score of 5-0. Center midfielder Lucas Craig and striker Kyle Beaulier played a large role as the seniors combined for four goals and five assists. Each scored twice, with Craig adding three assists and Beaulier two.
“Our senior leadership on the field really set the tone for our team and the game,” said Hornet coach Trevor Hews.
Junior Alex Kaiser also scored for the winners. Steven Bellanceau, the junior goalkeeper, only had to make six saves but came up with a huge one on a breakaway in the first half to keep his team in front 2-0 at the time.
“Our guys controlled the midfield very well and overall it was just a great team effort,” Hews added.
Ashland hosted No. 6 Penobscot Valley of Howland in the quarterfinal round Tuesday afternoon. The two teams met in last year’s quarters. The winner takes on the winner of the Bangor Christian-Easton quarterfinal, also played yesterday.
