STACYVILLE, Maine — Needing to win its final two regular season games to secure a playoff berth, the Washburn girls’ varsity soccer team did just that.
The Beavers, coached by Marcie Barbarula, notched wins by scores of 7-1 over Van Buren Oct. 13 and 7-2 over Fort Fairfield last Tuesday to finish 5-8-1 and beat out Bangor Christian for the 12th and final slot in Class D North.
On Thursday, Washburn’s season came to a close following a 3-0 loss to Katahdin. Erin Lake scored twice and Erin Robinson had the other goal for the Cougars, the No. 5 seed. They move on to play fourth-ranked Central Aroostook in this afternoon’s quarterfinal.
Maggie Castonguay, a freshman, was in goal for Washburn and collected 13 saves while facing 25 shots.
