LIMESTONE, Maine — The George Stevens Academy Eagles scored a goal in each half and kept the host LCS/MSSM Eagles off the scoreboard throughout, prevailing 2-0 in the Class C North preliminary playoff match Thursday afternoon.

GSA, ranked ninth in the division, moved on to play No. 1 Orono in Tuesday’s quarterfinal round. LCS/MSSM, the No. 8 seed, finished the season with a 6-9 record.

“It was a hard-fought match and both teams were evenly matched,” said LCS/MSSM coach Jon Hamilton. “We stuck to our game plan, which was to possess the ball and prevent GSA from crossing it, but unfortunately they scored a goal which caromed in off the crossbar late in the first half.”

Tyler Snow recorded that first goal off a Taylor Schildroth assist. LCS/MSSM adjusted its defense in an attempt to create more scoring opportunities, but a breakdown on on the defensive end led to a Schildroth goal with 9:20 to play.

“Overall, I am proud of the way we played,” Hamilton said. “We were aggressive and gave 100 percent the entire game.”

LCS/MSSM goalkeeper Mathew Pelkey stopped 18 of 24 shots in the loss.

“This season was a roller coaster ride with having to adjust positions due to injuries and illness,” Hamilton said, “but I think we made the right adjustments to capitalize on our play. I am pleased we made the playoffs and hosted a prelim game for the second year in a row.

“The boys worked hard throughout the season,” he added.
