DYER BROOK, Maine — Sophomores Kylie Vining and Katelyn Slauenwhite each scored goals and the Southern Aroostook defense did the rest Friday as the No. 8 Warriors blanked No. 9 Shead, 2-0, in a Class D North preliminary playoff.
With the victory, the Warriors (8-4-3) advance to the quarterfinals where they will face top-ranked, and undefeated Ashland (14-0) 4 p.m. Wednesday in the quarterfinals. The Warriors lost to Ashland twice during the regular season — 4-1 at home and 8-0 in Ashland.
Freshman Sydney Brewer saved the only shot she faced for SACS, while Madison Greenlaw had 11 saves on 25 shots for 6-5 Shead. The Warriors outshot Shead 25-1 in Friday’s game.
“This is a wonderful group of girls,” SACS coach Holly Vining said. “They are a lot of fun to watch. They had possession all game, and their passing and teamwork was excellent. We played them twice in the regular season, so we know what we’re up against. The girls are excited and will play hard. They always do.”
In boys’ preliminary soccer action Thursday, the No. 9 Warriors traveled to No. 8 East Millinocket, but came up on the losing side of a 3-0 game.
The Wolverines received goals from Colby Hannan, Chris King, and Mitchell McDunnah en route to the win. McDunnah and Riley Dionne each had an assist.
Justin Thompson made four saves on four shots for the Wolverines and Nolan Altvater made 15 saves on 25 shots for Southern Aroostook.
