HOULTON, Maine — Driving around town, chances are you may have seen someone’s front lawn covered with pink flamingos.
The senior class at Houlton Middle/High School is once again conducting a “flocking” fundraiser to generate money for the class.
“Flamingos have historically represented wealth, journeys and tackiness,” said Dylan Johnston, a senior at Houlton Middle/High School. “The senior class hopes these pink, plastic birds will attract attention and raise money toward our class trip.”
For a $20 donation, a person can have someone’s home — or their own — flocked by the senior class. The students arrive at the person’s home, typically after dark, and quietly place the plastic flamingos around the front yard so that the person sees them in the morning.
“One of the flamingos will have a note attached to it explaining that the flock will remain there until that evening, when they will migrate to someone else’s house,” Johnston said. “However, you can send them to a specific friend’s lawn by making a $20 donation.”
People can also participate by purchasing “flocking insurance” for $10 to make sure their home is not flocked.
