 PET BULLETIN
‘Mews and Yips’ from the Central Aroostook Humane Society

By Carolyn Cheney

Many people ask me how I have managed to serve on the Board of the Central Aroostook Humane Society for so many years and not have a houseful of animals.

I have never had more than two dogs at a time and know that I can’t have any more because my husband would shoot me. He loves animals very much, but he does say enough is enough.
Knowing the wonderful care our staff gives the animals and the efforts we all put into finding the perfect homes for them, I am comfortable not bringing many animals home, but I am tempted sometimes.  SH PETBULLETIN 15 16 17462848We realize not everyone can adopt our animals and we understand; however, a number of folks have asked how they can help us in other ways. Let me start by saying monetary donations are always welcome, or gift cards to purchase supplies. Sponsoring a cat or dog cage by paying a monthly or annual fee is a great way to help the shelter. Your name or business will go on the cage.
Some of the many supplies we can always use are: bleach, laundry detergent, new or used towels in good condition, paper towels, dish soap, cat litter (non-scoopable), dry dog food (Purina ONE Lamb and Rice) and dry cat food (Purina).
Volunteering your time at the shelter is always welcome. The dogs love to be walked, and you will make a new friend. The kittens and cats love to play outside their cages, so consider dropping in to help. I know the staff will be delighted. They spend a lot of time with the animals caring for them, but it leaves little time for play. Socialization is so important for the animals, and interacting with them makes them easier to adopt.
Just a reminder that our biggest fundraiser is going to happen on Nov. 19 at the Presque Isle Inn and Convention Center from 6 to 9 p.m. The 7th annual Toast to the Animals is a great way to help the shelter. Tickets are $15 each, available at the shelter or at the door. There will be a variety of beer, wine and food options to enjoy with your friends. Also, you will be able to start your Christmas shopping early. Each year our silent auction gets bigger and bigger with wonderful donations.
We still welcome business or individual sponsors. You can call (207) 227-1719 or send an email to csmith.esquire@gmail.com. Sponsorship donation checks can be made payable to “CAHS” and mailed to 650 Main Street, Suite B, Presque Isle, Maine 04769. Please join us and help the animals.
If you are looking for a lifelong companion, please stop by the Central Aroostook Humane Society at 26 Cross St. in Presque Isle. We are open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Visit us online at www.centralaroostookhumanesociety.org or check us out on Facebook.
Remember to be responsible: spay/neuter your animals!
