Editor’s note: This letter from the late Sgt. James R. Berry of Presque Isle was sent to The Star-Herald in late 1969.
Dear Friends:
This is a letter from an ordinary guy in a not so ordinary place. Viet Nam is my home for the next few months. In the short time I’ve been over here, I’ve learned to appreciate the common things of life. The things so often taken for granted by many, until they are placed in a situation like I am in now.
Before I make a mistake and go off on a tangent on freedom and the greatness of our way of life, I’ll stop myself with this comment, for that is not the purpose of this letter. There are a few who realize the value and unique way we live is not to be taken for granted. These people are aware of the suffering and determination it takes to achieve and maintain freedom. But, for those who don’t, I can only say “I wish you could experience a situation like Viet Nam, because I know it would remove the words ‘taken for granted” from your vocabulary.”
The purpose of this letter is to thank each and every person who has taken the time to sit down and write a little note on a card and send it to me. Only those who have been in a situation like I am in now can tell you how much it means to a man to get letters and cards from people back home. It gives one a warm feeling in his heart which doesn’t leave. Although it will take a while. I’ll try to answer all your letters. But in case I don’t, this letter is to thank you all and to tell you I truly appreciate the mail you send.
To some of you I am the man who taught your child how to swim, or to others I am the guy who made too much noise as I rode by on my motor bike. But to most I am no different than the rest of the guys who have left home to serve a “hitch” in the service and that’s the way I want it. As you read this letter, don’t think just of me, think of all the other guys from Presque Isle, Maine who are here with me in Viet Nam. When was the last time you dropped them a line to let them know you care?
