HOULTON & NORTH AMITY — Hugh Miller Libby 99, passed away peacefully November 3, 2016 at Madigan House with his family at his side, following a brief illness. He was born July 12, 1917 in North Amity, the son of William and Della G. (McLellan) Libby.
Hugh resided in North Amity and wintered in Zephrahills, Florida until 2003. He then spent his winters in Houlton and returned to his beloved farm for spring and summer. In 2013, Hugh joined the Madigan House family. He attended school at the Red Schoolhouse in North Amity and graduated from Ricker Classical Institute, Class of 1935. Hugh worked the family farm for many years then went to work for the Maine Dept. of Transportation helping build I-95. He was a member of the Amity Baptist Church, the Amity Grange and the Amity Pemona Grange. Hugh was a selectman for the town of Amity and was a board member of the Eastern Maine Electric co-op. After reading an article in the newspaper regarding funding to bring electricity to rural areas, he wrote a letter to President Roosevelt requesting these funds. After receiving the funds, Hugh with Marion by his side collected signatures at each household. He enjoyed playing ball on the team at Rainbow Village in Florida and was voted MVP in his 80’s. Hugh was an avid Red Sox fan and enjoyed many spring training games and listened or watched their games. He was an avid hunter and outdoors man. Hugh was a great storyteller and he shared his experiences on many topics.
Hugh is survived by his grandchildren Michael Lynds and his wife Sheila of Monticello, Charlotte Lynds of Georgia, Stephen Lynds and his wife Sandy of Bangor, Beth McFarland of Houlton, Kristie Jacobs of Brewer, Lynette Rarrick and her husband Jon of Ohio, Leisha Murray of Houlton, Craig Libby and his wife Kristi of California; 16 great grandchildren, 9 great-great grandchildren; nieces Karen, Linda and Ellen. He was predeceased by his parents, his stepfather William Davis, his beloved wife of 62 years Marion, his son William “Bill” Libby, his daughter Patricia “Pat” Callnan, his brother Lewis and his sister-in-law Louise.
Friends may call 3-5 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 6, 2016 at the Dunn Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Monday, Nov. 7, 2016 at the funeral home with Rev. Richard McLaughlin and Hugh’s grandson Craig Libby officiating. Interment will be in the Amity Cemetery. A time of fellowship will be held at the Amity Baptist Church following the interment.
