The Mars Hill William Cousins American Legion Post 118 will hold a turkey dinner with all the fixin’s on Friday, Nov. 11 from 3-8 p.m. for all veteran’s and active duty personnel and their families in District 16. Make plans to come and have a good meal and socialize with other veterans.

Ring the Bells for Peace on Veteran’s Day

Nov. 11 has been proclaimed “Ring the Bells for Peace on Veteran’s Day” by Governor Paul LePage. This was spearheaded by American Legion Post 22 and American Legion District 3 in Androscoggin County and several other Veteran Service organizations.
All churches in Maine are called on to ring their bells at 11 a.m. for two minutes. American Legion District 16 Commander Rod Collins encourages all churches in Aroostook County to ring bells as well.
The first Armistice Day was celebrated by the ringing of bells in England, which was the inspiration for doing this.

Rotary Club

The Mars Hill Rotary Club met Nov. 1 at the Aroostook Health Center and the guest speakers were John and Robin Barker of Bridgewater.
John has an upholstery business and also is a volunteer firefighter. Robin taught English for 45 years — 44 of them at CAHS.
John and Robin have also been “official” weather observers since 1979 when they took over for John’s father. John does most of the outside work and Robin enters the data on the computer, although they used to have to send in written reports.
Another thing that John has in the works is a Swedish sauna. He has been working on it for the past three years in his spare time. He admits that he has never been in a sauna, but bought a book about it 40 years ago.

Library auction

The Walter T. A. Hansen Memorial Library is beginning to gather items for the annual Bidding For Good on-line auction to be held early next year. This is typically the library’s largest fundraiser and allows it to add to its collection.
Those with items to donate to the auction can contact the library at 429-9625. Thank you to all who help with this fundraiser.
