Owl soccer teams compete in tourney

The third-ranked UMPI women earned a berth in the American College Athletic Conference soccer finals with a 3-2 win over No. 4 Pine Manor in the semifinal round held Friday in Scarborough.

Goals by Carla Halvorson, Deliah Schreiber and Sam Nadeau were enough to advance. Nadeau assisted on Halvorson’s goal and Halvorson set up Schreiber’s tally.
In Sunday’s title game, the Owls were beaten by top-seeded SUNY-Canton, 2-0. UMPI outshot the Roos by a 10-6 margin in the second half after the Roos dominated the first half by outshooting the Owls, 16-1, and scoring both their goals before intermission.
The Owl men were beaten by No. 1 Alfred State, 3-2, in the semifinal round Friday. UMPI took an early 2-0 lead on a pair of goals by Cody Blair. The first was unassisted and came in the fifth minute and the second was the result of a Derek Healy pass in the 14th minute.
The Pioneers cut the lead to 2-1 at intermission and two goals in the 87th minute tied the score and gave them the lead.
Alfred State went on to lost to No. 3 Pine Manor, 2-0, in the finals.

Fund-raising auction is Friday

The Presque Isle Inn and Convention Center will be the site of the Owls’ Action Auction, set for Friday beginning with a social at 6:30 p.m.
Roast pork, pasta primavera, rice, a vegetable, salad and dessert will be served at the dinner, which gets underway at 7 p.m. The evening program, featuring words from UMPI Athletic Director Mike Holmes and members of the Owls’ coaching staff, will follow. An auction will conclude the event. Raffle drawings will be ongoing throughout the evening.
This is a fundraiser to raise money for athletic facilities on campus. Tickets are $25 per person. Contact the UMPI athletic office at 768-9475 for more information.
