HOULTON, Maine — Houlton High School has announced that Kate Newman has been chosen to receive the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Good Citizen Award. Each year this prestigious award is presented to a high school senior who exemplifies the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism.
Newman was among three outstanding members from the Class of 2016 to be nominated for the honor by faculty at Houlton High School before being voted in as the winner by the senior class. In addition to local recognition, she will compete against other DAR winners from throughout Maine in the Good Citizen Essay Scholarship Contest later this month and will travel to the Esther Eayres Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Orono on April 3 where she will be honored for her accomplishments.
Newman is an honors student who is actively involved in a multitude of activities within the community and at school. In addition to being President of her 4-H Club, she is the coordinator of the Everyone Cares Dinner Program, serves as president of the National Honor Society and is a member of Houlton High School’s Civil Rights Team and Student Council. Newman’s academic accolades include being a Williams College Book Award recipient, a Princeton Book Award nominee, being named a PVC All-Academic Scholar Athlete, and receiving the Principal’s Award throughout her high school career.
Her contributions to Houlton High School also include participation in the cross country and track and field teams as well as being a New England Student Leadership Conference delegate who has received the Houlton Rotary Club’s Certificate of Achievement the past three years. In addition, Newman was selected as Student of the Month for Positive Leadership, earned place first in the Empowering Women Essay Contest and received the Donna Wheeler Social Studies Award.
As a lifelong member of Aroostook County 4-H, Newman has won numerous awards showing livestock and exhibiting projects including claiming grand champion in showmanship in her division from 2007 through 2011 and receiving first place in the Northern Maine Agricultural Education Exhibit contest.
Her interests include martial arts and gymnastics, and her hobbies are farming, reading and gardening. Newman enjoys volunteering in her community and spends a great deal of time bringing awareness to the issue of food insecurity. She is also a participant in the annual Makenna Minutes to Miles Memorial Relay in memory of Makenna Ward, the Aroostook County 4-H Paper Clover fundraiser and enjoys helping out wherever she sees a need.
Upon graduation Newman will pursue a degree in human rights. She currently resides in Ludlow with her parents James and Andrea Newman.
