100 Years Ago – Nov. 15, 1916

 60 years — Sixty years of wedded happiness is the record which Mr. and Mrs. Esmond Weed celebrated at their cozy home on Court Street on Nov. 9. It is a pleasant life’s journey up on which they look back happily and they are enjoying the years of later life in content and in good health. They were married in Monroe, Nov. of 1856 and nine children were born to them.

 Moved — Mr. Wm. H. Ormsby of the Cochran Drug Co. has moved into his handsome new home which he has recently completed.

 

75 Years Ago – Nov. 13, 1941

 Meeting — The Houlton Garden Club will have its
last regular meeting at the home of Mrs. J.R. Harvey, Nov. 18. Harold L. Chadwick will be the principal speaker and will discuss, “What’s New for Christmas.”

 Winner — Wallace E. Lawlor of New Limerick was the winner of the silver loving cup awarded this year in the fifth annual contest conducted by the J.R. Harvey Company for the largest potato. Mr. Lawlor entered a tuber weighing 3 pounds and 6 ounces.

 

50 Years Ago – Nov. 16 , 1966

 Interstate — The Oakfield-Houlton section of Interstate 95 will be opened to traffic this Friday. The public is invited to attend two ribbon-cutting ceremonies. Master of ceremonies will be David H. Stevens, chairman of the state Highway Commission. Members Bertrand A. Lacharite and Carl M. Stilphen will be present. This is the second of Maine’s two new sections of interstate highway to be opened to traffic this fall.

 Award — Mary Boyce of Houlton, University of Maine sophomore, accepted a $100 check from John Skillins, Maine State Florist Association president, for excellence in her work in commercial floriculture and ornamental horticulture at the university. The fund was established in 1963 by Charles J. Greeley, former owner of a Portland greenhouse, in memory of the late Frank P. Presti of Portland, a U of M graduate and trustee.

 

25 Years Ago – Nov. 13, 1991

 60 years — James and Genevieve Pelkey of Patten celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Saturday at Meadowbrook Manor. They were married Nov. 3, 1931 at St. Louis Church in Fort Kent. On Saturday, they renewed their vows with Rev. Richard McLaughlin officiating. Mr. Pelkey is 89 years old and Mrs. Pelkey is 79. They are the parents of 11 children, and they have 36 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.

 Donations — The Hodgdon Recreation committee has voted to donate funds to benefit the Hodgdon Middle School cheerleaders for their Dallas trip. Beth Riley accepted a check for $100 from Mrs. Quint, representative of the rec committee. Riley is the daughter of Susan and Richard Riley and has been a volunteer in the summer recreation program.
