102 Years Ago — November 12, 1914

Preserving order — The firemen at their meeting voted to have three or four of their number on duty each Friday evening at the moving picture theatre to assist in preserving order among the children, in accordance with a request made by sec. J.J. Thompson, and the hearty co-0peration was much appreciated.

Meat market improvements — M.X. Beaulieu made extensive improvements in his meat market on Bridge Street, one of the finest and most up-to-date stores in town done by contractor Charles H. Smith. The entire front of the store, which was a double one, was torn out and large plate glass window put in. The door was set in several feet to allow for window displays at the sides as well as the front.

75 Years Ago — November 13, 1941

Parkhurst elected — At a meeting held at the Northeastland, Edwin E. Parkhurst was elected president of the newly formed Aroostook Livestock Association. Other officers named were George Hamilton of Limestone, vice president; Herbert Kitchen of Presque Isle, treasurer; and Bryce Jordan of Presque Isle, treasurer.

Preble is chairman — The annual meeting of the local branch of the American Red Cross was held at the High School The following officers were elected: Mrs. S.E. Preble, chairman; Mrs. F.S. Cunningham, vice chairman; Miss W.E. Mills, treasurer; and Mrs. R.W. Cary, recording secretary.

Green nominated — Harry B. Green, Presque Isle business merchant, was nominated by Gov. Sewall to the Maine State Park Commission. He was nominated to succeed Newton Stowell of Dixfield, who resigned.

50 Years Ago — November 17, 1966

Gould fund adds $19,000 — Two new subscriptions amounting to $19,900 – $10,000 from the Presque Isle Hotel Company and $9,000 from the Women’s Auxiliary of the Arthur R. Gould Memorial Hospital – were added to the hospital expansion fund. The auxiliary subscription was to be used to build and equip the new conference room, while the hotel funds were to be decided upon at a later date.

Barnes named VP — George H. Barnes of Presque Isle, immediate past president of the Maine Potato Council, was elected vice president of the National Potato Council at the organization’s annual meeting in Phoenix, Ariz. Barnes had served on the national council’s steering committee for the past two years.

25 Years Ago — November 13, 1991

Family reunited — Five brothers and sisters, separated by adoption at birth and unknown to each other, gathered for a special reunion in September at the home of eldest brother, Vernon Doucette of Madawaska. The siblings learned from their natural mother, who lived in Edmundston, NB, that there were five more members who had not yet been found and contacted. Celebrating the reunion, as well as Vernon’s 36th birthday, were family members Edith Helstrom of Fort Fairfield; brother David Theriault of Fort Kent; Jamie, Vernon and Jenny Doucette, all of Madawaska; brother, Darrell Theriault of Fort Kent; Jonathan Helstrom; and brother, Robert Findlen of Presque Isle.

Present pledge — First Citizen Bank representatives Steven St. Pierre and David Dorsey presented the bank’s 1992 corporate pledge card to Susanne Sandusky, executive director of United Way of Aroostook. In addition to their corporate pledge, the bank also supported United Way through its Community CD program and its employee chapter plan which has had 100 percent employee participation for two consecutive years.
