HOULTON, Maine — The Salvation Army is hoping that its annual Christmas Kettle Campaign will mean a brighter holiday season for struggling men, women and children in Maine.
Officials from the Houlton Salvation Army have also sent out notices that the group is now accepting Christmas applications through Dec. 9. The Houlton office is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Fridays 9 a.m. to noon.
Those applying for assistance must bring proof of everyone in the household (license or birth certificates, insurance ids); proof of income; proof of expenses; and clothing sizes and wish list for children 18 and younger.
Funds raised through the familiar red kettles are vital to The Salvation Army’s programs and services. This year’s statewide campaign goal is close to $800,000 as Salvation Army leaders attempt to meet the increasing demands for assistance.
The charitable organization expects to have more than 120 red kettles throughout the state on street corners and shopping areas through Dec. 24.
“The money raised through this effort are critical in securing our services for both the Christmas season and throughout the year,” said Major Raphael Jackson, Divisional Leader, “but I have faith that the community will respond generously and help us reach our goal.”
The Salvation Army’s Christmas ministry includes the distribution of toys to needy youngsters, food baskets and food vouchers, warm winter coats and so much more during the rest of the year. Last year more than 18,000 individuals were served in Maine by The Salvation Army during the holidays and nearly 25,000 throughout the year.
The red kettle has been a longstanding tradition with The Salvation Army and an endearing sight across the country during the Christmas season. Dating back more than 125 years, the kettle has been an important source of revenue in addition to being an iconic symbol of the holidays.
