Gary Delong

DELONG, Gary, 72, Fremont, NH, Nov. 8, 2016. There will be no services per Gary’s wishes.

Gary A. Delong died November 8, 2016 from complications of cancer while in residence at Colonial Poplin in Fremont, NH. He was born August 4, 1944 in Houlton, Maine, the seventh of eight children of Elbridge and Dorothy (Hanning) Delong. He was a long time resident of Derry, New Hampshire.

Gary graduated from Houlton High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Vietnam and receiving an honorable discharge with the rank of Sargent. After the service he worked as a deputy sheriff and then began a forty plus year career supporting and building computer systems as a trouble shooter and network engineer for various companies in Colorado, Arizona, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire.

From an early age Gary demonstrated an interest and aptitude in electrical and mechanical systems. His father was a farmer and Gary had many opportunities to ‘tinker’ on vehicles, equipment and electronics. His interests continued and he received training and practical experiences with radio, communications and computers. He was a ham radio operator for much of his life. He enjoyed trips on his Harley and was a life member of the Harley Owners Group and the NRA. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1617 and the American Legion Post 79. He was a life-long reader of thoughtful science fiction and could enjoy a vigorous discussion of current events.

Gary was predeceased by his parents, his sisters Joy Keough and Patricia McGowan, his brothers Vincent (Buddy), Walter, and Leon Delong, as well as his long-time companion, Elaine Pasternack. He is survived by his sister Candace (John) Muehleisen of Cumberland, ME, brother Alvin (Delores) of Roanoke, VA, sisters-in-law Evelyn Delong of Littleton, ME and Jeanette Delong of Monticello, ME, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and long-time special friends. Gary could not have thought more of Leslie Pasternack, Elaine’s daughter, and his friend Robert Letourneau than if they were his daughter and brother. He was a very private person who cared deeply about his friends and family and would often help those in need, sometimes without their knowledge.

Gary’s family and friends wish to thank the staff of Colonial Poplin for the quality care they provided him while he resided there. Gary never went to funerals and said he did not want to start with his own, so there will be no service or remembrance held. Family and friends can best celebrate Gary by looking to enjoy life and lend a helping hand when you can. There will be a family gathering next spring in Aroostook County, Maine where his name will come up from time to time with a smile and nod.
