‘Mews and Yips’ from the Central Aroostook Humane Society

We are excited; we are just days away from our biggest event of the year.
The Presque Isle Inn and Convention Center has teamed up with the Central Aroostook Humane Society to put on the seventh annual Toast to the Animals, a beer and wine tasting and silent auction fundraiser. The Toast will be held this Saturday, Nov. 19, from 6 to 9 p.m.
Tickets are $15, available at the door, and all the proceeds will benefit the Central Aroostook Humane Society. We depend on our generous sponsors and silent auction donations to help make this event happen. The Toast has been growing each year by leaps and bounds and has become our shelter’s largest and most popular annual fundraiser. The evening will bring good friends together to enjoy live music, sample a variety of wine, beer and food options. You can browse and bid on many silent auction items, try your luck with a 50/50 raffle and maybe you will win some of our wonderful door prizes.
Our favorite part is a running slideshow not only listing our valued sponsors, but showcasing “happy ending stories.” Many have sent us photos of their beloved pets that have just been adopted, longtime family pets and even memorial photos of pets that are waiting at the Rainbow Bridge. We hope that you will come out for an evening of socializing, live music and good cheer for a great cause.
We certainly enjoyed a super beautiful summer and the fall couldn’t have been more gorgeous, but we all know what is right around the corner. We winterize our homes. We winterize our cars, and we humans get out our warmer clothes, especially coats, hats and boots. Therefore, it is important we winterize our dogs.
When the temperature is above freezing many dogs, especially ones with long fur, are quite comfortable outside. Short-haired dogs will not be. A dog’s nose, toes and ears are very vulnerable to cold weather. It is important to keep in mind that when a dog’s coat gets wet, it loses much of its insulating ability. If dogs are outside a lot they need a draft-free shelter, plenty of food and unfrozen water. A good tip to remember: if it is too cold for us, then it is too cold for our four-legged friends. Keep them inside where it is safe and comfortable, and hopefully right on your lap.
Please visit us at the Central Aroostook Humane Society, located at 26 Cross St. in Presque Isle. Our hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., closing for lunch 12-12:30. We have way too many cats and kittens, and even though they receive lots of care and love while in our shelter, they want a permanent loving home. Some folks prefer to wait until spring to adopt an animal, but cats are generally litterbox-trained and are waiting now for a loving forever home.

Please remember to be responsible pet owners … spay and neuter!
