FORT KENT, Maine — The Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger, which has raised and distributed more than $6.5 million to help end hunger in Maine since 1990, has again partnered with Brenda Davis, who recently visited Aroostook County on the campaign’s 15th annual walking tour.
The tour made a record 12 stops in Aroostook County the week of Oct. 24, including Ashland, Caribou, Eagle Lake, Fort Fairfield, Fort Kent, Houlton, Island Falls, Madawaska, Presque Isle, St. Agatha, St. Francis and Van Buren. This year’s Walking Tour was the largest yet, visiting a record-setting 90 communities from Madawaska to Kittery.
Davis, one of the state’s leading ending hunger advocates, is the director of BBC Opportunity Center, an Old Town-based hunger agency that serves thousands of Maine people, and executive director of Cross Roads Ministries of Old Town. During the tour, which took her from Madawaska to Kittery, she covered the state on foot to raise awareness about the severity of hunger in Maine.
At each credit union, she picked up a contribution from the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger as a way to support her cause. Contributions will enable local food pantries to purchase nearly $20,000 worth of food and supplies at the Good Shepherd Food Bank. Statewide, funds will help food pantries to purchase nearly $150,000 worth of food to feed Maine’s hungry.
Davis began her month-long journey on Friday, Oct. 21, in Augusta, and concluded the event with a special ceremony in Bangor on Monday, Nov. 21. Her journey encompassed about 750-800 miles on foot.
Since 1990, the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger has raised over $6.5 million to help end hunger in Maine including a record-setting $623,000 in 2015.
