Locals serve in All Maine Women

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Two University of Maine students, both 2013 graduates of Presque Isle High School, are members of the highest all-female honor society at the Orono campus.

Rachel Marie Dow and Meredith Stewart were inducted in April to the All Maine Women Honor Society, and most recently participated in Homecoming weekend Oct. 14-16. Ginger Kieffer of Caribou is also a society member.

Dow is a chemical engineering major minoring in pre-medical studies. She participates in a variety of activities on campus, including the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Delta Zeta Sorority, Society of Women Engineers, Order of Omega Greek Honor Society, and TAPPI/PIMA.

She just completed her third semester as a student engineer for paper mills in Bucksport, Old Town and Madison.

As a member of AMW, Dow serves as historian. After graduation, she plans to attend medical school and pursue a career in rural healthcare in Maine.

Stewart is majoring in secondary education with a math concentration, minoring in leadership studies.  She is a four-year member of Delta Zeta Sorority, Alpha Upsilon Chapter, and Kappa Delta Pi, an international education honor society. She is involved in R.E.A.C.H., a student-led volunteer group with whom she has traveled to Huancayo, Peru, and Tumbaco City, Quito, Ecuador, to work on school and community service projects.

She is a member of Order of Omega Greek honor society, and has served in various leadership roles of the Panhellenic Council Executive Board and the University of Maine Student Government Inc. She also tutors math students.

Stewart is the AMW social chair.  After graduation, she plans to head abroad and pursue teaching options in other countries, and later pursue a master’s degree in higher education.

AMW members are pledged to uphold and promote the ideals, standards and traditions of the University of Maine, cooperating with all organizations and movements. They are also tasked with carrying on work which will tend to draw faculty, staff, students, and alumnae/alumni together.

Society members have volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House in Bangor and are preparing future service projects.
