115 Years Ago – Nov. 27, 1901
Sold — The handsome residence property of Hon. Louis C. Stearns, on High Street, was sold to Jas. H. Glenn, the hardware merchant, by the Hall Co.
Snowstorm! — No lack of snow for the sleighing since the last storm, which deposited about 12 inches of the beautiful. The snow commenced falling Sunday night and continued until Monday night.
100 Years Ago – Sept. 10, 1916
Addition — H.D. Collins is adding a second story to his sawmill. This is the fourth mill which has been built on the same site, three having been burned.
Skating — Skating on the river above the dam has been exceptionally good during the past week, and many of the young people have been taking advantage of it.
75 Years Ago – Nov. 27, 1941
Passenger Service — Passenger service on the Aroostook Valley Railroad will be resumed Monday, Dec. 1 after being discontinued for the past several months. Cars will arrive at West Caribou at 8:15 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 4:20 p.m. and will leave respectively at 8:30 a.m., 2:10 and 4:30 p.m.
50 Years Ago – Nov. 30, 1966
Bleachers installed at CHS — The late arrival of the bleachers for the new high school gymnasium caused some panic, among school department officials as the basketball season approached and it even appeared, as late as last weekend, that the open house at the new building might have to be cancelled again. The first shipment of the bleachers, originally promised for the first week in October finally reached the high school on Nov. 21.
Will the real Santa stand up — Saturday was “Santa Claus Day” in Caribou, complete with parades and bands, color floats and elves. But the problem was the number of imposters who turned up to confuse the issue and bewilder thousands of children that day. Santa Claus even received the acid test at the main gate of the Loring Air Force Base where an Air Policeman twinged his whiskers to determine if they were real. The word had reached the base that an impersonator was in the area and police were not taking any chances.
25 Years Ago – Nov. 27, 1991
Fire chief retires — Caribou Fire Chief Gardner Sperry will retire from his position today, Nov. 27, after serving the Caribou Fire and Ambulance Department for 35 years. Veteran firefighter Roy Woods was appointed by the Caribou City Council to fill the fire chief’s position effective today. Sperry was appointed Caribou’s fire chief July 1, 1985.
Fire claims storage building — Lost in an early morning fire last Wednesday was the pro shop/storage building at the Caribou Country Club. Twenty-five firefighters with three trucks responded to the one call reporting the fire at 3:07 a.m., Wednesday. Fire Chief Gardner Sperry said the building was nearly gone when firefighters reached the scene. The department estimated 52 golf carts in addition to golf clubs and a five-year-old Pontiac Trans Am stored in the building.
