102 Years Ago – November 19, 1914
Annual inspection — A largely attended and very enjoyable meeting of Lunar Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star was held, the occasion being the annual inspection of the chapter. Mrs. H.O. Perry of Fort Fairfield, as director deputy grand matron, witnessed the complete ritualistic work and spoke in terms of commendation regarding the proficiency of the degree team, also speaking of new rulings as made at the last school of instruction.
The Pierian Club sale — The civic improvement committee of the Pierian Club planned a sale of Mexican embroideries, novelties and curios, an excellent opportunity to purchase Christmas gifts and assist in the work of the committee.
75 Years Ago – November 20, 1941
Pipeline open — Only 142 days after ground was broken for its construction, the nation’s first national defense pipeline went into operation when Gov. Sumner Sewall turned a giant valve at the South Portland pumping station of the Portland Pipe Line Company and sent the first batch of crude oil into the new $8,500,000 Esso pipe line; an oil flow of 236 miles under the rugged terrain of Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire, and on to Montreal petroleum refineries.
Cheney wins scholarship — Philip D. Cheney, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam C. Cheney of Ashland, was awarded a Charles F. Woodman scholarship at the University of Maine. Cheney, a sophomore in chemical engineering, was on the dean’s list the prior year, a member of the university chorus and of Sigma Nu, social fraternity.
50 Years Ago – November 24, 1966
More donations — Three new subscriptions totaling $15,200 were added to the steadily growing Arthur R. Gould Memorial Hospital Expansion Fund. The new gifts were Presque Isle Lions Club, $6,000; Washburn Trust Co., $5,000; and O’Donnell’s Express, $4,200. The Lions Club gift will build and equip a two bedroom for adult surgical patients on the first floor of the hospital’s new wing. The Washburn bank’s gift will build and equip the nurses station on the second floor on the second floor of the hospital’s new wing. The gift from O’Donnell’s Express will establish a private room on the same floor which will stand in memory of the late George C. O’Donnell, founder and first president of the trucking firm.
York elected — Harley W. York Jr., CPA of Mars Hill, associated with the accounting firm of Chester M. Kearney and Co. in Presque Isle, was elected a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants in New York.
25 Years Ago – November 20, 1991
Laboratory accredited — The Aroostook Medical Center laboratory had been awarded a two-year accreditation by the Commission on Laboratory accreditation of the College of American Pathologists (CAP), based on results of an on-site inspection. The TAMC laboratory was one of more than 4,200 CAP accredited laboratories nationwide. The accreditation program is recognized by the federal government as being equal to or more stringent than the government’s own inspection program.
Mill employees recognized — The following Pinkham Lumber employees had achieved safety anniversary dates in October. A safety sticker was placed on their hard hats to recognize these employees as safe workers. Recognized were: Alfred Michaud of Eagle Lake, 11 years; Lance Hayward of Portage and Myron Howes of Ashland, six years; J. Norman O’Clair of Ashland, four years; and Delcy Voisine of Clair, N.B., two years.
