Rotary Club
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met Nov. 15. at the Aroostook Health Center and the guest speaker was Travis Kearney, general manager of Bigrock Ski Area. Kearney took over management in July and he spoke about the background of the ski area and the path that was taken to the current time.
The ski area undergoes work year round. There are various maintenance issues that are done every year. They also work on sources for the vast amount of water that is used when they make snow. Between 700 and 800 gallons of water is used every minute that the snow jets are running! They have some ponds on the mountain, but the lack of rain this year has left those water levels down.
The Ski For Life Program is used by many of the schools in Aroostook County and sees approximately 4,000 kids use the mountain annually. This is made possible by donations from local busineses and others that realize the importance of skiing.
Bigrock will be bringing back snow tubing this year. They have done a lot of work on the area making it much safer. They have also ordered new tubes that have a special bottom surface so the speeds will be much more manageable. The tubing hours will be Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m.-noon and from 1-4 p.m. The cost is $10. There will be extended hours on holidays and school vacations.
Other events at the mountain include the Big Rock 5K obstacle course. It included nearly 200 participants this summer and it grows each year. The course is set up so some of the obstacles are at the bottom so anyone can come watch the event. It is very exciting to watch those brave souls taking on the mountain.
