The Butch Shaw award is presented annually to Aroostook County boys and girls from classes B, C and D who are outstanding soccer players and also exemplify the characteristics of respect and sportsmanship.
The award is selected by a committee consisting of officials from the Northern Maine Board of Approved Soccer Officials.
Nick Bartlett of Presque Isle was the recipient for Class B boys and Madison Michaud of the Wildcats for Class B girls, while Mackenzie Carter of Ashland claimed the honor for Class D girls. Ryan Player of Fort Fairfield and Jake Flewelling of Easton were chosen for Class D boys.
Other Aroostook County winners were, in Class C, Tobyn Blatt of LCS/MSSM and Aspen Flewelling of Houlton; and Class D, Jenna Dugal of Madawaska.
Clyde “Butch” Shaw, a Mars Hill native, became a member of the NMBASO in 1972, making him one of the first officials of the sport in Aroostook County. He was also a well-known and respected varsity basketball and baseball coach at Presque Isle High School. He loved sports and was known for his motto “Hustle, Pride, Defense.” He was diagnosed with leukemia in July 1985 and passed away in October of that year.
The award in his name was established in 1986.
