PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The UMPI/Community Band will present their fall/winter concert on Monday, Dec. 5, 2016 at 7 p.m. in UMPI’s Wieden Auditorium.
“This concert is a culmination of all our hard work this semester,” said conductor Jon Simonoff of Caribou. “We definitely wanted to give a nod to the holidays with a couple of festive tunes while staying true to our roots with plenty of classic concert band music. There will be something for everyone at this concert.”
To illustrate the breadth of the program, the concert will open with “The Hounds of Spring,” a fast-paced and dazzling piece by Alfred Reed. It will be immediately followed by the mellow and melancholy “Ashokan Farewell,” written by Jay Unger and best known by most as the theme from the PBS miniseries “The Civil War.”
Other works on the program include “Semper Fidelis” by John Philip Sousa, “A Mad Russian’s Christmas,” (a medley of Tchaikovsky and Kinkel pieces originally performed by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra) and “Salvation is Created,” an arrangement based on a work by Pavel Tchesnokov.
The UMPI Community Band is composed of Aroostook County musicians ranging from youth, to current and retired educators, as well as performers.
Admission is free, and all community residents are encouraged to attend.
