1916: Powers Theatre nearing completion

115 Years Ago – Dec. 4, 1901

Unprecedented — Twenty inches of snow fell, which makes now over four feet of snow on the ground, an amount unprecedented in the history of our town at this time of year. We trust we shall not be visited by many such storms the coming season, although they bespeak a plentiful harvest another summer.

Valuable logs — It is reported that there are logs valued at about $80,000 in the St. John River. On account of low water, it was impossible to get the logs down the river. It will be quite a loss to the owners.

New theatre — P.J. Powers’ new theatre is rapidly nearing completion, and will be opened to the public on Thursday night of next week.

Dry — Rumors have been current for some time that most of the towns in New Brunswick will go into the “dry” column by spring, and the saloons in Perth-Andover close to the Fort Fairfield boundary will be out of business.

New price — Due to the rising costs of paper, ink, type, metal, etc, the Aroostook Republican rates will be rising to $2 a year, up from $1.50. Between now and then, you can subscribe or renew subscriptions, up to 1945, at the present price of $1.50 per year. Where else can you get this much for so little cost?

Weather conditions — Regular road condition bulletins broadcast daily over various radio stations were inaugurated Dec. 1 by the State Police Headquarters. WAGM will broadcast the latest weather conditions each day at 10:45 a.m. and 6:45 p.m.

50 Years Ago – Dec. 7, 1966

Used toys — The Caribou Fire Department is issuing its annual appeal for used or repairable toys for needy children at Christmastime. Although no official announcement has been made prior to this time, some toys have already been at the station and members have begun the task of painting and repairing them. According to Don Woods, fire chief, last year, 1,033 gifts were provided for 471 children in 105 families. He hopes that this year’s efforts will be just as successful.

Joke’s on you — The joke is on you these days if you are still putting nickels and pennies in Caribou parking meters. Whether the word has got around, there is free parking from Dec. 1 through Dec. 25 during the pre-Christmas shopping season.

25 Years Ago – Dec. 4, 1991

Shoppers out in full force — Shoppers were out on Black Friday once again this year in Caribou. Rich Gobbo of J.C. Penney in Caribou said the holidays are looking “happy at this stage” and that they were running out of merchandise. Jim Roach of Sears & Roebuck in Presque Isle said that the store’s exclusive sponsorship of the broadcast premiere of “E.T.” helped his store make a good start to the season.

Milton honored — The Caribou Business and Professional Women’s Organization announced its selection of Norma (Blackstone) Milton to be this year’s local “Business Woman of the Year” at the Nov. 19 luncheon meeting at Yusef’s. Milton started her business, Home Farm Kennels, in 1976 at her own home. Currently studying business management, Mrs. Milton has gone back to school. Her son has taken over the day-to-day activities of the kennel with some assistance from Milton.
