100 Years Ago – Nov. 29, 1916

Trip — Mr. and Mrs. Cecil McGinley left last week on a trip extending as far as Washington, D.C., visiting Boston and New York en route.

College bound — Burrill Shaw and Rowe Sylvester of Mars Hill are attending Houlton Business College.

 

75 Years Ago – Nov. 27, 1941

Retired — Mrs. Edith B. Holden of Oakfield, who retired as postmaster Oct. 31, had 28 years of government service. She began her duties on Jan. 2, 1914, when the post office was in the basement of the Commercial House and the late Charles S. Lougee was postmaster. At the date of her first appointment, parcel post had just been introduced.

New president — Miss Erma White, a member of the Houlton High School faculty, was elected president of the Southern Aroostook University of Maine Alumni Association at a meeting Wednesday evening at the Northland Hotel, at which President Arthur A. Hauck of the university was guest speaker.

 

50 Years Ago – Nov. 30 , 1966

Happy anniversary — Mr. and Mrs. LeForest Gallop were honored at a 25th anniversary party Nov. 23 at their home. They were presented with a money tree and other gifts. Flowers in honor of the occasion were donated by Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Welton. Hostesses for the event were Mrs. Alwyn Gallop, Mrs. Gary Gallop, Mrs. Robert Henderson Jr. and Mrs. Wilfred McQuarrie.

Visit from Santa — Santa Claus made his arrival in Houlton Saturday and was greeted by local officials before taking part in the annual Santa Claus parade sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. Santa was greeted by Terrence Riley, chairman of the Retail Trade Board, and Robert Ivey Jr., president of the Chamber of Commerce.

 

25 Years Ago – Nov. 27, 1991

Special day — Thursday was a special day for the employees at Cary Library in Houlton. An open house marked the completion of a series of renovations to the 22-year-old bottom floor of the library that began in September. Librarian Betty Fraser told those present that about $10,000 in donations were received to help with the $155,000 project.

Winner — Sharon McGary, along with Glenda Riles and Elizabeth Anderson, presented Mary Ann Sanders with a gift certificate from the Florida vacation promotion held recently at Travel Connections. Her prize included four round trip air tickets from Bangor to Orlando, including car rental, hotel accommodations, four super Disney Parks passes, and more.
