Local lawyer recognized
Norman Trask was awarded a Katahdin Council Award in recognition of performing more than 50 hours of pro bono legal services for 2016. This is the second consecutive year he’s been recognized for this honor. The award was presented by Justice Donald Alexander of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court.
The award is issued to those lawyers statewide who perform 50 or more hours of free services for those people, including the elderly, the disabled and veterans, who cannot afford a lawyer.
Attorney Richard Dubois of Caribou and Attorney Jeremiah McIntosh of Washburn were also recipients of the Katahdin Council Award at the Oct. 14 ceremony.
With respect to the Katahdin Counsel Award, the Chief Justice of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court, Justice Leigh Saufley, stated the following: “We are very proud of Maine lawyers. They recognize that lawyers have a special responsibility to help fulfill the promise of justice for all. The Supreme Judicial Court is grateful to all lawyers who are providing pro bono and low-cost legal services, and the Court is particularly appreciative of the Katahdin Counsel lawyers, who have truly led the way in providing pro bono services to their fellow Mainers. Katahdin Counsel lawyers have set a high standard in the legal community for donating their time and talents to help their fellow Mainers in need.”
Diabetes Awareness at Easton School Department
The Easton School Department wellness teams participated with the American Diabetes Association in celebrating November as “American Diabetes Month.”
The celebration took place Nov. 15 and included “National Health Lunch Day.” This highlights the importance of good nutrition as part of a healthy lifestyle for which the school’s nutrition staff motivates students as well as staff to commit to a healthy and delicious lunch every day.
Later in the afternoon approximately 60 students and 10 staff from Easton Elementary School and Easton Junior-Senior High School participated in the “Walk to Stop Diabetes,” which took place on school grounds. At the end of the walk a diabetic student who attends the high school along with two students from the elementary building who’s mother is a staff member and a diabetic, released gray and light blue balloons representing the color logo for the ADA/diabetes.
Everyone enjoyed the exercise, camaraderie, and show of support for this worthy cause. The walk event raised $123, in which half will be donated to ADA and the remaining half will support the student wellness team in its efforts to promote wellness education and activities for students.
The wellness teams would like to say “thank you” to staff, students and parents for their support in helping to make this event such a success.
