102 Years Ago – Dec. 3, 1914
Lecture — Editor C.C. Harvey of Fort Fairfield was in town in company with Dr. G.W. Chamberlain. The doctor lectured on anaesthesia before the nurses at the Presque Isle General Hospital.
Child Study Club — An interesting program was given at the meeting of the Child Study Club, which was held with Mrs. A.M. Smith, Academy Street. The two principal subjects taken up during the evening were “A child’s companions and what they mean to him,” and “Red Letter days in home and school.” Various articles were read pertaining to these subjects and helpful discussion followed. Miss Florence M. Hale acted as leader for the evening.
75 Years Ago – Dec. 4, 1941
Cuban experiences — Bryce Jordan of this city, assistant Aroostook County Agent, was the principal speaker at the Rotary luncheon, giving his fellow Rotarians an interesting talk on incidents occurring during his stay in Cuba. He described the methods used in sugar production and the growth of fresh fruits. Guests attending the session were Wilbur Edgecomb, Rumford; Henry Russell and Llewellyn Woodman, of Washburn; A.B. Loring, of Springfield, Mass.; Kenneth Gardiner and George Wilson of Calais.
Street had high single — D. Street collected the high single string of 129 in the Mooseleuk Club bowling tournament. Henry Gagnon, fireball ace came through with the high five string total honors with 572. The same Mr. Gagnon also boasted high average for the season with a neat 107.3. Team one led in the team race with a total of 26 points.
50 Years Ago – Dec. 8, 1966
State chair — C. Hazen Stetson, president of the Maine Public Service Company, Presque Isle, was elected chairman of the Maine Council of the New England Council, succeeding Philip W. Hussey Jr. Stetson moved up from vice chairman. Elected vice chairman was Robert B. Moore, a partner of John C. Paige Company – Insurance, Portland. Roderic C. O’Conner, manager of the Maine Industrial Building Authority, August, and David W. Fox, treasurer of Fox & Ginn, Inc., Bangor, continued to serve as secretary and treasurer of the Maine State Council.
Title — Soil Scientist Dave Lewis, Soil Conservation Service, assigned to the St. John-Aroostook Resource Conservation District and development staff, conducted a course in soil science for a group of Aroostook County students taking a special sugar beet course at Aroostook State College, under auspices of the Cooperative Extension Service. Representatives of the Sugar Beet Growers Association, Maine Sugar Industries and Aroostook County sugar beet growers participated in the the timely course of study.
25 Years Ago – Dec. 4, 1991
Martin named to board — Roland D. Martin, Aroostook County administrator, and a former state senator and representative to the Maine Legislature, was appointed to the Selective Service Board to represent area 1, local board 1 (Aroostook County) for the State of Maine.
Agent is recognized — Presque Isle resident Ron Kofstad, agent with the Farm Family Insurance Companies, was presented the 1991 Maine Farm Bureau Award, a highly significant award. The award was given at the state’s annual Farm Bureau meeting, held in Kingfield, for best combined rank over three sales categories reflecting excellence in identifying and serving the insurance needs of Farm Bureau members in Maine.
