Connor kids collect several hundred pounds of food items

CONNOR, Maine — The students, staff, and faculty of Connor Consolidated School recently came together and gathered 250 pounds of food for community members in need.

According to Connor Principal Heather Anderson, four turkeys, Cool Whip, butter, and a number of other items were donated in addition to the 250 pounds collected by the school.

“Last year we raised 200 pounds of food and had six good-sized boxes,” Anderson said. “This year, I think we could make at least eight boxes, and 10 would be a good goal to have.”

Anderson says the food stays in Connor and is given to any community member in need during the holiday season.

“We look to our own community first and, through the grapevine, we’ll find out if someone needs a helping hand,” Anderson said. “Sometimes people approach us and tell us someone needs food.”

To motivate students, the school holds a contest among preK-6 grade classrooms to see which group collects the most food. Anderson said every class did so well that the entire school will be awarded with an ice cream sundae party for their hard work.

“The staff distributes food to the community after everything is collected and packed in boxes by the fifth and sixth grade classes,” Anderson said.
