100 Years Ago – Dec. 13, 1916
Trip — Miss Florence Ingersoll of Orono, formerly of Houlton, leaves early in January for Juneau, Alaska traveling by way of Chicago, St. Paul and Seattle. She is to spend the coming year with her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Hubert P. Crowther of that city. Miss Ingersoll plans to visit Japan before returning east.
Taking a course — Miss Louise Vose who is employed as stenographer in the law office of Hon. A.A. Putnam, will leave the latter part of December for New York City where she plans to take a course in a business college.
75 Years Ago – Dec. 11, 1941
Birthday celebration — Mrs. E.S. Manson spent her 93rd birthday, Dec. 1, at her home where she received many calls from her friends and two beautifully decorated birthday cakes, many presents and a shower of birthday cards from all over the United States, North, South, East and West.
Guests of honor — The officers and men now stationed at the Houlton Air Base were guests of honor at the first official welcome to Houlton Friday evening held at the Houlton Theatre and arranged by Manager Francis Gooch. Greetings were extended by W. Scott Brown, chairman of the Town Council, Jasper Lycette, commander of the Chester L. Briggs Post, American Legion and by Mr. Gooch. Showing their respect for the soldiers and enjoying the feature, Abbott and Costello in “Keep ‘Em Flying.”
50 Years Ago – Dec. 14 , 1966
New office — Dr. Richard B. McGraw, optometrist, announces the opening of this office at 23 Court Street in Houlton for the general practice of optometry and the fitting of contact lenses. Dr. McGraw is a native of Oakfield and is married to the former Dorothy Carey of Bucksport. They have two sons, Shawn, 3, and Todd, 18 months.
New Skating Rink — The Parks and Recreation Department announced this week that work is nearing completion on an ice skating rink at Community Park. Dr. G.I. Wilson has been instrumental in providing a layout for the undertaking and also offered constructive suggestions.
25 Years Ago – Dec. 11, 1991
50 years — Ruth and Alton Smith were honored at a 50th anniversary celebration at their home in Blaine, hosted by their son-in-law and daughter, Donald and Carol Guppy and granddaughters, Heather and Holly McDonough, all of Massachusetts. The Smiths were residents of Bridgewater, owning a farm there most of their lives. They were married Jan. 30, 1942 in Mars Hill by Rev. George Hammond. Best man was Norman Rees and maid of honor was Marjorie Kneeland.
Award — Maitland J. Stevens and son and daughter-in-law, Maitland A. and Annette Stevens of Island Falls received the Outstanding Conservation Award for 1991. They were presented the award by chairman Perry R. Lilley of Oakfield Nov. 14 at the Southern Aroostook Soil and Water Conservation District’s annual awards banquet conducted at Joe’s Family Restaurant.
