MERRILL, Maine — Somewhere between 80 and 90 children attended the popular “Christmas In The Park” at Merrill Millstream Park Saturday, Dec 3, 2016. Near ideal conditions, with plenty of snow cover and mild weather, greeted those in attendance as Santa entered the park to the delight of all.
Merrill Millstream Park committee hosted this increasingly popular annual event. Families came from surrounding towns of Merrill, Smyrna, Oakfield, Crystal, Island Falls, and even Houlton.
While Santa’s arrival at 10:00 am was the main attraction, many other unexpected treats awaited those attending. Hot chocolate and cookies were generously handed out as everyone got there early awaiting Santa’s arrival.
The park committee was able to hand out gift bags to each child, filled with candy, toys, stuffed animals and more. Jill Bustard of Merrill, assisted by granddaughter Roegan of Oakfield, oversaw the filling of 100 gift baskets to make sure no one was left out.
According to Ken Bustard, chairman of the MMP committee, the event was “another incredibly successful Christmas in The Park. The mild weather was incredible. Unlike Southern Maine, we had plenty of Christmas snow. Kids had a great time, not just seeing Santa and getting gifts, but taking time to build a snowman, enjoy the playground equipment and just hang out for a while as opposed to rushing home due to the cold.”
Various volunteers showed up to help make the event successful. Ralph and Cindy Bartman ensured there was plenty of hot chocolate with the cookies. Jill Bustard served as Santa’s elf, handing out the gift bags. Andy Bustard had a welcoming camp fire going.
