To the editor:
The headline “State Geologist Favors Smart Mining” in last week’s Star-Herald was misleading — and is exactly what we do not need from the press.
Choosing a headline is not properly an opportunity to proselytize a political view the editor may wish was the basis of an article. The term, “Smart Mining” — a marketing slogan of the industry, was not uttered by anyone in the article.
A headline that read “Ancient Native American Quarries Destroyed” would have been an alternative headline. So would Robert Marvinny’s statement that he was “… not sure that Bald Mountain could be mined safely …”
