PEAKS ISLAND — Richard A. Sherwood, Jr. of Peaks Island, husband, father and grandfather, died Sunday, November 27, 2016 after a struggle with Parkinson’s disease, at Seaside Rehabilitation in Portland. He was 81.
Richard was born July 31, 1935, in Portland, the son of Richard A. Sherwood and Faith E. (Densmore) Sherwood. He graduated from Morse High School in Bath in 1953, and was part of the class of 1957 at Dartmouth College, though he spent several years in the army in between his Junior and Senior years. After completing his undergraduate degree, he received a Master of Arts in Sociology from Duke University in 1964. It was during his time at graduate school that he met his future wife, Emily Dinkle, while she was at school at the University of Maryland. They married on December 27, 1963 and had one son.
Richard held teaching posts at the University of North Carolina, Bucknell University in Pennsylvania and Ricker College in Houlton, Maine. Richard and Emily moved to Augusta in 1974, shortly after which he obtained a position as Senior Planner at the Maine State Planning Office, a position that he would hold for almost 30 years.
Richard was an Eagle Scout and enjoyed the Maine outdoors, spending time fly fishing, camping, bicycling and walking to and from work nearly every day in all kinds of weather, a 2.8 mile round trip. He spent many weekends at Peaks Island, a beloved getaway to which he would retire in 2001. He was a long time member of Old South Congregational Church in Hallowell and also of Brackett Memorial United Methodist Church on Peaks Island.
A wise and gentle soul, Richard was devoted to Emily, his wife of 53 years, and was a wonderful father to his son.
Richard is survived by his wife, Emily, son, Seth and his wife Camden and their sons Aiden and Caleb and daughter Claire. He is predeceased by his father, Richard A. Sherwood and his mother, Faith E. Sherwood.
