The Presque Isle Wildcats’ hockey team debuted in style Friday, picking up a 4-2 win over Camden Hills at the Forum Friday.
Sophomore Riley Kinney took a pass from freshman Connor DeMerchant and one-timed it past the Windjammer goalie for the go-ahead goal in the second period, while senior defenseman Denny Young tallied an unassisted goal in the third for insurance.
Sophomore Torey Levesque had Presque Isle’s first goal on a power play at the 11:33 mark of the opening period before Camden Hills scored twice early in the second period to grab the lead. Young tied it with a short-handed goal midway through the second, leading to Kinney’s game-winner a few minutes later.
Andre Daigle, PI’s sophomore netminder, stopped 16 shots for his first career win.
“I was pleasantly surprised with our puck movement and our teamwork in our first game of the season,” said Wildcat coach Carl Flynn. “Our defense was tough and our goaltending was reliable. It was a great way to start the season.”
Presque Isle began a stretch of road contests Tuesday with a game in Houlton against the Blackhawks. The Wildcats will take on Hampden Friday, Brewer Saturday and Old Town/Orono Dec. 23 before returning to the Forum to play Messalonskee Dec. 27.
“Hopefully we can build some momentum off this first win,” Flynn said, “as most of these upcoming road games are going to be very challenging.”
