The Westerdahl’s Novice team played last weekend (Dec. 3-4, 2016) against Victoria-Tobique on Dec. 3 and Woodstock on Dec. 4. The kids are learning to pass and work as a team. Their skating and puck handling skills are improving each time out on the ice. They are getting the hang of offense and defense. Over all they are doing a great job and having a blast while doing it.
Yorks of Houlton played an exciting game against VTMHA Jr. Thunder Atom tournament Dec. 3. The first game was against Carlton 2. Yorks won 8-4 with Connor Lynds scoring seven goals with one assist by Patrick Marino. Trenton Soucy also scored one goal with an assist by Landon Hispley. Player of the game was Dawson Cole.
The second game against Grand Falls 2 was a 7-2 loss. Lynds scored both goals for the team and also got Player of the Game.
The last game was another tough loss, despite playing hard, against Victoria-Tobique 2 with the score being 13-4. Lynds scored three goals and Hipsley scored one goal. Zachary Hoops got Player of the Game.
The Varney Agency Jr. Black Hawk Bantams headed south Sunday, Dec. 4 to play two games against the Jr. Black Bears Blue at Sawyer Arena. With the team still suffering from injuries and attrition, Varney Agency had just six skaters and Seth Bagwell in goal. There were no complaints about playing time.
At the beginning of the first game, the play was evenly contested with Jason Collett getting the only goal of the first period assisted by Logan Swallow and Gavin Vining. Despite the short bench, Varney Agency got stronger as the game went along opening up a 5-1 lead at the end of the second with goals by Swallow, Kurtis Reynolds and two by Vining. The Black Hawks went on to score three more goals in the third period. Getting goals were Vining, Reynolds and Swallow with an assist by Caydon Campbell. This sealed an 8-2 win.
In the second game, Varney Agency came out to a quick start with a goal by Reynolds assisted by Collett only 25 seconds in. Reynolds got a second goal in the first with the Blackhawks holding a 2 to 1 first period lead. Vining got to rest in the penalty box for the first 6:30 of the second period and the Black Hawks fell behind three to two. With Vining well rested after serving the penalties, Varney Agency went on to score three goals with two by Swallow and one by Collett with a pretty assist by Vining. Houlton, despite being short handed, got stronger in the third period with three unanswered goals with two by Vining and one by Reynolds. Again the Black Hawks were stingy on defense with John Cummings getting stronger every time out and Bagwell having another good game in goal. Despite being short on numbers but not heart, the Black Hawks finished a gutsy day with an 8 -3 win.
