The high school boys’ basketball season began with a flurry of action over the weekend and if Friday night’s opening game between Southern Aroostook and Central Aroostook is any indication, hoop fans are in for a treat this year.

The following is a recap of games played through Monday. Coaches are asked to report their scores to the newspaper after each game by calling 532-2282 or emailing results to jcyr@pioneertimes-me.com

Southern Aroostook 85, Central Aroostook 51 — At Dyer Brook Friday evening, the host-Warriors scored early and often enroute to the lopsided win over the Central Aroostook Panthers.

SACS’ Nolan Altvater scored 12 of his game-high 24 points in the second quarter to help catapult the Warriors over CA. Tyler Batchelder chipped 17 points and Jackson Mathers added 14 for the Warriors.

Central Aroostook was led by Zachary Crouch with 19 points, while Ben Thomas contributed 15.

Penobscot Valley 53, Katahdin 45 — At Stacyville Saturday, Cougar Hunter Craig poured in 19 points while Brody Guiggey scored 18, but it was not enough to lift Katahdin past Penobscot Valley.

Grant Kidon netted 23 points, Jonathan Littlefield chipped in 12 for the Howlers.

Katahdin led 15-9 at the end of the first quarter and 26-24 at the halftime break for PVHS seized a 35-32 advantage after three periods.

Madawaska 26, Hodgdon 55 — At Hodgdon Saturday, Hawk senior Kevin McAfee returned to the court for the first time since a knee injury derailed his entire junior campaign. McAfee poured in 15 points to lead all players, while fellow Hawks Daden Palmer added 11 and Wyatt Foster had 10.

Tristan Cyr scored 10 points in the losing effort for the Owls.

Hodgdon led 13-7, 23-9 and 40-17 at the quarter breaks.
