The Southern Aroostook girls basketball team kicked off the 2016 hoop season Friday with an impressive victory over Fort Fairfield, while Katahdin came up just short in its attempt to secure a season-opening win.
On Saturday, Hodgdon was competitive in its first game with new head coach Wendall Harvey, but could not come away with the victory.
Southern Aroostook 67, Fort Fairfield 33 — At Fort Fairfield Friday, the Warriors jumped to a 20-4 first-quarter lead and never let up in their commanding win over Fort Fairfield. SACS’ eighth-grader Kacy Daggett led all players with 20 points, while freshman Sydney Brewer chipped in 16; Kylie Vining added 13 and Makelyn Porter had 11 for the Warriors.
The Tigers were paced by Cammi King-Demerchant with nine points and Emma Campbell added seven.
Southern Aroostook led 20-5, 36-15 and 52-29 at the quarter breaks.
Katahdin 40, Penobscot Valley 46 — At Howland Friday, Katahdin led 11-9 in the first quarter and was up 22-19 at the break, but could not maintain that edge in the second half.
“It was a close game and we hung with them the whole way,” Katahdin coach Jona Fitzpatrick said.
Georgia Landry scored 19 points for the Cougars, while Natalie Rickards had 10 and Haley Landry picked up nine points.
Lexi Ireland had a game-high 21 points and six steals for the Howlers, while Liz McKinnon chipped in with eight points, five rebounds and six steals.
Madawaska 55, Hodgdon 32 — At Hodgdon Saturday, Janelle Goff tossed in 13 points to lead Hodgdon in scoring while Megan Russell added seven points, but it was not enough to pull out the win.
Desiree Belanger scored a game-high 18 points to lead Madawaska. Jenna Dugal contributed 13 points for the Owls.
Madawaska led 10-8, 25-11 and 47-18 at the quarter breaks.
