Poor weather conditions forced the cancellation of many games Saturday, but the action resumed Monday with Southern Aroostook picking up a big win over Fort Fairfield. The Warriors are now a perfect 3-0 on the young season.
Hodgdon sports a 1-1 record, while Houlton, Katahdin, Greater Houlton Christian and East Grand are all still searching for their first wins of the year.
The following is a recap of games played through Monday that were reported to the newspaper.
Fort Fairfield 52, SACS 67 — At Dyer Brook Monday, the Warriors picked up a big win over Class C North foe Fort Fairfield. SACS competes in the Class D North region.
Warriors Jackson Mathers and Nolan Altvater each tossed in 21 points, while Tyler Batchelder added 10. Fort Fairfield’s Carter Bruce hit six 3-pointers, scoring 22 points for the Tigers. Chris Giberson added 13.
SACS led 16-8, 36-21 and 45-36 at the quarter breaks.
East Grand 23, Van Buren 31 — At Van Buren Saturday, Crusader Taylor Soucy scored 15 points as Van Buren defeated East Grand of Danforth.
Thomas Gilman led the Vikings with nine points while Philip Farley added eight.
GHCA 45, Wisdom 46 — At St. Agatha Thursday, the Eagles nearly came away with their first win of the season as GHCA battled Wisdom. A GHCA shot with 1.7 seconds to go was blocked by Wisdom’s Jack Guerrette.
The Pioneers led most of the first half, up 15-11 at the end of the first quarter and 28-22 at halftime, but GHCA fought its way back to take a 35-34 lead after three periods. The Eagles led for much of the fourth quarter, but never by a sizeable enough margin, and Wisdom rallied to take a late one-point lead.
Jed Grant paced GHCA with 16 points, while Guerrette led Wisdom with 21 and Kody Cyr added 17.
Katahdin 50, Penquis 51 — At Milo Thursday, the Cougars nearly pulled off a dramatic victory, only to fall one point short. Devon Cuthbertson tallied 19 points and nine rebounds to lead Penquis past Katahdin of Stacyville. Charles Artus added 16 points and Colin Beckett 10 for the 1-1 Patriots.
Brody Guiggey paced Katahdin (0-3) with 18 points. Devin McGraw contributed 15 points and 13 rebounds while Hunter Craig also scored 13 points.
Penquis led 10-7, 26-22 and 40-35 at the quarter breaks.
Washburn 53, Southern Aroostook 85 — At Dyer Brook Wednesday, SACS’ Nolan Altvater scored 21 points as the Warriors cruised past Washburn. Tyler Batchelder contributed 12 points for the Warriors while Jackson Mathers and Garrett Siltz each scored 11.
Washburn was paced by McCall Turner with 15 points and Quintin Thompson with 10 points.
Hodgdon 44, Easton 48 — At Easton Wednesday, Jake Flewelling tossed in a game-high 29 points, including a perfect 11-of-11 from the free throw line to lead the Bears over Hodgdon. Jordan Doody added 11 for the Bears.
Daden Palmer netted 17 points for the Hawks.
“It was a back and forth game in the first quarter and at the half Easton took a seven point lead 28-21,” Hodgdon coach Robert Smith said. “We closed it to three points at the end of the third quarter.”
Houlton 62, Presque Isle 67 — At Presque Isle Wednesday, Bradley Kinney tossed in a game-high 20 points to pace Presque Isle past Houlton. Griffin Guerrette added 13 points and Jacob Kinney had 10 for the Wildcats.
Cameron Graham led Houlton with a game-high 22 points, while Keegan Gentle netted 17 and Jacob Worthley added nine.
GHCA 36, Limestone 37 — At Limestone Dec. 13, Travis Hatfield’s buzzer-beating putback lifted Limestone past Greater Houlton Christian. Alex Sprague’s nine points led Limestone, while Victor Negron also had nine points.
Isaac Potter had 10 points for Greater Houlton Christian.
Katahdin 48, Bangor Christian 67 — At Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor Dec. 13, Dean Grass led all scorers with a game-high 35 points and eight rebounds to power the Patriots to victory.
Austin Keib posted a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds for 1-1 Bangor Christian.
Brody Guiggey led Katahdin with 15 points, while Hunter Craig chipped in with 11 points and Devin McGraw netted nine.
