The Caribou Fire and Ambulance Department worked diligently to educate area residents on the importance of taking personal responsibility when it comes to home fire protection and continued their efforts in installing smoke alarms for local residents.
A group of Maine Military Authority workers who normally repair and rebuild military vehicles for the National Guard volunteered their time to upgrade and refurbish a used Humvee and trailer at a reduced cost for search and rescue operations in Maine.

Kieffer Insurance Agency, located on High Street in Caribou, marked 90 years in business. The history of Kieffer Insurance dates back to 1926, when the MD McGrath Insurance Agency first opened.
The people of Caribou no longer have to travel out of town to purchase major appliances and furniture, as the newly opened Sears Hometown store on Sweden Street has plenty to offer.
Gregg Collins of Caribou was elected chairman of the Northern Maine Community College Foundation, a nonprofit organization which raises and distributes funds to help NMCC meet its commitment to provide superior educational opportunities.

Caribou’s Gallagher Insurance Agency was recognized by the Concord Group Insurance Companies for representing the insurer as an independent agency for over 55 years.
Sears Hometown in Caribou celebrated its official grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 17.

Michelle Hanson and the Frederick’s Southside crew worked hard to maintain the Caribou restaurant, delivering signature dishes ranging from chicken melts and homemade donuts, to pizzas with special crust and sauces. Hanson’s efforts were recognized by the United States Small Business Administration. SBA announced Hanson as the winner of the Woman Owned Small Business of the Year Award for Maine.
Cary Medical Center was recognized by the SafeCare Group as one of the top 100 SafeCare Hospitals. The hospital earned the distinction based on performance in several key measures. The 100 SafeCare Hospitals consist of hospitals that excelled in the comprehensive, evidence-based metrics of the Affordable Care Act.
The 36th annual Northern Maine Agri-Business Trade Fair was held at The Forum in Presque Isle and Crown Equipment of Caribou took the Best in Show award in the large booth category.
Robert P. Clark, executive director of the Northern Maine Development Commission in Caribou, represented Maine on a national industry board. Clark was elected April 13 to the board of directors of the National Association of Development Organizations.

The Sign Place, previously owned by husband and wife Rick and Sandy Guerrette, was purchased by another husband and wife team moved to Caribou. Joey and Lindsey Cowett, owners of North End Landscaping in Caribou, now own the Sign Place and moved the business to Caribou at the end of May.
A study from New York financial technology company SmartAsset found which cities are most affordable by measuring housing costs relative to income data in cities across the country. Caribou ranked as one of the most affordable cities in Maine this year, coming in number 1, a repeat of their performance in last year’s study.
June
Cary Medical Center and Pines Health Services were selected to participate in a special program that allowed third-year medical students to train in Aroostook County. In partnership with Maine Medical Center in Portland Maine, Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM) offers a Maine Track — a unique, innovative curriculum that offers clinical training experiences in Maine and exposes medical students to the unique aspects of rural practice as well as training in a major tertiary medical center.
Cary Medical Center earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for Hospital Accreditation by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards.
