Elks make festive meal for 230

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine More than 230 people turned out Christmas Day at the Presque Isle Elks Lodge on Main Street for the club’s 12th annual Family Christmas Dinner.

Alan Harding, past exalted ruler of the local Lodge 1954, reported the facility was at full capacity for the now traditional event, which the Elks provide free of charge to anyone who might otherwise be alone on Christmas.
Members and volunteers began preparing weeks ago with help from local businesses; members contributed breads and desserts, while the Northeastland Hotel donated tomato bisque soup and Governor’s donated dinner rolls and pies.
Those who needed transportation to and from the event got a ride in style when Elks picked them up by limousine, courtesy of Ace Rent-A-Car, or by wheelchair-accessible van.
“At the lodge, the Elks served their guests, who were predominantly elderly citizens, a five-course, sit-down, traditional Christmas dinner, and provided live musical entertainment, all to ensure that these guests would not be celebrating Christmas alone,” said Harding.
The idea to host a community Christmas dinner began in 2005 with then-Exalted Ruler Mary Dickinson, who with her husband, Dana, believed no one should be alone on Christmas. The event has grown every year.
In addition to the meal and fellowship, guests enjoyed music featuring the “Soggybottom Boyz,” comprised of Wendell Hudson, Leland Clark, James “Sheldon” Wright and other friends.
