Knock twice, cut once

It’s that time of year again when we make all kinds of resolutions that we know we just won’t keep.

The ball will drop in New York just like all years in the remembered past and the day will dawn, new, but in some ways old as well.

The weather this year has cooperated with those of you who participate in winter sports. I have seen a few snowmen and remember when the days were that I made a few of them. I am no longer able to do much out of doors, but I do enjoy watching some of the sports and I follow the local school sports news in the paper.

My son sent me a birthday card that was kind of a “Deja-Vu” card. It started out Remember When … and it listed a whole list of things we used to do as kids and young teens. It brought back a lot of memories that I will be sharing in 2017. For this issue, though, it will seem as though I am rambling with my thoughts, and perhaps I am a bit.

This morning I looked out the window here at home and I saw a lot of spruce and fir trees bordering our lot here and the limbs were almost totally snow covered. It brought to mind the first time I ever cut a fir tree for home and our Christmas. I stepped under the tree with my axe and took a swing. Yep you guessed it, I got about 30 pounds of snow down my neck. I learned the hard way to knock the snow off the tree before chopping or cutting with a saw. Oh those precious lessons learned.

To those of you near and far who read this little posting, I thank you for doing so. If I have triggered some memories of your own through the telling of mine, I have accomplished what I set out to do.

From my family and home to yours and also speaking for the management and staff of the Star-Herald, please have a safe and responsible New Year’s celebration and a wonderful and most prosperous New Year! On this New Year’s Day, have a seat, a hot cocoa or coffee and sit and remember when …
