The Walter T. A. Hansen Memorial Library will be participating in the Chickadee Award: A Maine Children’s Choice Picture Book Project.

Participating children in grades K-4 are the ones who will choose the award winner by voting for their favorite from among 10 selected books published in 2016. The 10 books were chosen by a committee of teachers, librarians and early literacy professionals.
In this process children and adults will develop and share an appreciation for excellence in writing and illustration that will stay with them forever. This statewide project encourages connections between public libraries and schools and helps foster literary dialogue among adults and children.
In addition to selecting the 10 books for review, the committee has compiled a booklet of information, suggestions and activities to make it easy for any interested school, home school group or public library to participate.
The project will begin on Jan. 7 and end on March 11, when voting will take place.
The Chickadee Award Project is funded by the Maine Association of School Libraries. For more information, visit the chickadee website at www.chickadeeaward.org.

Rotary Club meeting notes

The Mars Hill Rotary Club met Dec. 20 at the Aroostook Health Center and the special speakers were Vicki Jackson and Connie Durost, activity directors at the Aroostook Health Center.
They thanked the club for the iPods that were donated for the resident’s use. They are very popular, with some liking them so much that they have gotten their own. Bingo remains their most popular activity and is played several times each week.
They are also thankful for the new television in the sunroom that was donated by the state police, as well as a DVD player donated by a resident’s family.
Thanks to donations from area churches, from staff members as well as items bought with raffle proceeds, each resident will be receiving several gifts this Christmas. They are very appreciative for all the support!

Winterfest 2017

Winterfest this year will be moved up to take place on February 10-12, 2017. This years’ theme is “Happy 150th Birthday Bash” in honor of the town’s Sesquicentennial birthday. Along with most of the usual events, this year will bring back a snow sculpture contest for homes and businesses, the Whoopie Pie contest and a special “couples contest” on Friday night. This will test how well couples know each other and promises to be a fun and entertaining time!
